"Let me repeat myself -- I am not a crook," said Bush to one of the crowds hastily assembled from voter rolls, this one in Bastin, Ohio.
Unlike earlier presidential appearances before the public, the audiences of this tour do not appear to be as rigidly controlled.
"Many states, with the help of the Attorney General's office, have cleaned up their voter rolls, so that we are confident that only the most responsible citizens will be at these events," said Bryan Budwell, a White House event coordinator.
At another appearance, in Wincomb, Montana, Mr. Bush received enthusiastic applause with the statement, "I am not a crook."
